WHO IS RUSS COOK AKA THE HARDEST GEEZER?
I’m Russ Cook. In 2024 I became the first person to run the entire length of Africa, 16,300km from the southern tip to the northern tip. For me, adventure isn’t just a hobby: it’s my life’s work.

For Russ, training is every day, no excuses. That means kit needs to go the distance. 247 fits into that perfectly.

When I’m at home, it’s usually a jogger, hoody combo. When I’m away, it changes, desert heat calls for tanks, but in Iceland it was all about the heavier layers and jackets. It’s versatile kit for a lifestyle that never stays still.
I usually travel light, but when you’re putting your body through marathons every day, certain things are non negotiable:
• 247 socks, I’ve burned through hundreds of pairs running Africa. Fresh socks are like a fresh start. We go again.
• Shoes, for Africa I went through 30+ pairs, in New Zealand another dozen. Always a rotation.
• Utility vests, essential for staying armed with sweetie’s & electrolytes .
• Recovery slides, when the workouts are done it is time to free the slugs.
That’s basically my suitcase: enough to run, enough to recover, and nothing extra.
What can’t you go without?
• Utility vest, pockets, water, gels, survival.
• Sports watch, data drives improvement.
• 247 cap or bucket. I am ginger after all.

TRAINING & RECOVERY WITH RUSS:
Recovery is the difference between one big effort and lasting the distance:
• Hydration, litres of water every day
• Blister prevention, tape and fresh socks
• Muscle pain, 8 hours sleep stretching, yoga when I can
• Arc 3 recovery slides, feet thank me every time
